Tallahassee

Like the city itself, the story of how Tallahassee was chosen as the state capital is rich in history. In 1823, two explorers set out - one on horseback from St. Augustine and the other by boat from Pensacola - to establish a permanent, central location for the seat of government. The two met at a beautiful site that the Creek and Seminole Indians called "Tallahassee"- derived the words "talwa", meaning town, and "ahassee", meaning old.
It is definitely an educational trip to visit our state's capital, however the drive is too long for a one day trip. Your group can book a narrated tour of the new capitol building and even meet a Senator! Just next door, is an amazing collection of old Florida, at The Museum of Florida History. Be sure to plan 1 -2 hours for this museum.
This tour combines well with other Florida or Georgia destinations. This is an important stop on any Florida college tour, as Florida State is one of our oldest and most prominent universities in our state. Home of the Seminoles!
