THE EVERGLADES

It is interesting and exciting
to discover the subtle beauty of the Florida Everglades. At Gatortrax Adventure
Tours, Inc. we feel strongly about preserving this fragile eco-system and
sharing it with our visitors. There are several attractions which show different
aspects of this vast region. All of these destinations are accessible for a day
or partial day tour. Some can even be combined with a city tour.
1. Gator Park
Only 45 minutes west of Miami
on the Tamiami Trail, this attraction offers more personalized airboat tours and
a gator show. Great boat captains, make your 45 minute boat ride lots of fun!
Cool gift shop and a small café with Everglades delights as well as the burger
fair.
2. Safari Park
Glide over the Glades on a
large airboats with professional captains. This park is located between Gator
Park and the Miccosukee Village on Hwy 41. They offer an alligator show,
highlighting some of the early hunting moves that originated into gator
wrestling. Walk around the park for some great gator viewing! Café and Gift
shop.
3. Shark Valley
Experience a unique 2 hour tram-tour into the heart of
the Everglades prairie. Midway through the tour the tram will make a stop a 50
foot observation tower. Bicycles are also available for the more sporty visitors
for this 16 mile paved trail! This is a National park.
4. Sawgrass Recreational
Park and Holiday Park
Located 45 minutes west of Ft. Lauderdale these
attractions offer airboat rides and wildlife displays. 5. Miccosukee Indian Village
This attraction is located 45 minutes west on Miami on
Hwy. 41, on the Miccosukee Reservation. Here you will visit a commercialized
replica native Village with many live Gators, and arts and crafts. They do offer
Gator wrestling, although inconsistently. There is a small cultural museum, and
a short Boardwalk to view the Glades. A large gift shop with authentic clothing
and crafts is found at the entrance. Airboat rides are offered across the street
where they will take you to one of the first inhabited islands in the area.
 6. Billie Swamp Safari
Located 1.5 hours west of Ft. Lauderdale, off of I-75
you will find this remote replica Seminole Indian Village in the heart of The
Big
Cypress Preserve directly on the Seminole Reservation. Billie’s makes a
great day outing, offering many things to do. Take a 1 hour guided Buggy tour
over the prairies and though the Hammocks where you will discover lush tropical
South Florida vegetation. During this tour you will see both indigenous birds
and wildlife, as well as many exotic species. Billie Swamp Safari also offers a
short, but exciting airboat ride, a venomous snake show, and a critter show.
Enjoy a peaceful walk though a
cypress dome on a boardwalk. The Swamp Water
Café serves up some great native specials, and well as other country delights.
It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but closes early evenings. You can
rent inexpensive cypress chickee huts with either 2 or 12 beds for an awesome
Overnight experience! There are nighttime activities available such as Buggy
trips and Indian Stories. Full restroom and shower facilities are also
available. This is a great experience for school groups and families.
 7. Ah-Tha-Thi-Ki
Museum
This museum is accredited by the American Association
of Museums and has the most thorough display of Seminole history and
culture. Located in the town of Big Cypress, this is a great combination with
your Billie Swamp Safari outing. Begin your tour with a 20 minute film called
“We Seminoles” then continue through the gallery with lifelike displays of
Seminole Life in the 1800’s. Time permitting, enjoy a 1 mile long boardwalk
through a Cypress woods.
8. Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
A 2.25-mile raised boardwalk
takes visitors through four distinct environments: a pine upland, a wet prairie,
a cypress forest, and a marsh. For those who do not wish to walk the full 2.25
miles, an optional trail shortens the walk to one mile. Volunteer naturalists
are usually on the boardwalk to answer questions. This sanctuary is located
Northeast of Naples.
9. Everglades and Biscayne National Parks
The parks of Flamingo,
Everglades City, and Biscayne offer many backcountry trails suitable for hiking
and biking to view birds and wildlife. Boat trips, canoe rentals, and snorkeling
excursions of the 10,000 Islands are also available. Get a better understanding
of our diverse eco-systems in the brackish and salt-water mangrove areas.
